Multi-effects for live performances

The MOD Dwarf is the more affordable little brother of the MOD Duo X, which was first launched in 2010, and both models allow the user to design a complete pedalboard. The MOD Dwarf packs a wide variety of effects, amp simulations, synths, loopers, sequencers, and much more into a footprint of just 202x105mm, and four different modes are available to allow the user to intuitively navigate through the effects, select and store presets, and control the various parameters with extreme precision. Essential tools such as a tuner and a metronome are naturally also included. In addition to the intuitive user interface, the interchangeable effects can also be controlled via an optional MIDI controller. Thanks to this range of features, the MOD Dwarf eliminates the need for musicians to maintain a large, expensive, and of course heavy pedalboard from gig to gig.

Pedalboard configurator

At the core of the MOD Dwarf is a Quad-Core ARM A35 processor with 1GB of RAM. The intuitive user interface features an LC display and three infinitely adjustable rotary knobs to provide quick and easy control of more than 180 effects (to which more can be added from the Plugin Store), 115 amp simulations, 30 virtual instruments, and 30 MIDI tools. The MOD Dwarf has a total storage capacity of 8GB, which also provides space for samples and IR files for individual reverb effects. Users can additionally save their own presets and recall them in a matter of seconds, ensuring that every performance will go smoothly. The signal flow can be controlled using the MOD Dwarf's onboard mixer and buses, which provides complex routing options for the individual modulation of parameters.

Compact allrounder for instrumentalists

The MOD Dwarf is designed for instrumentalists looking for a diverse range of effects and practical tools in one compact device that eliminates the need to haul cumbersome equipment back and forth while on tour. Weighing just 0.8kg, this diminutive effects processor will easily fit into virtually any gig bag, and since the rear panel includes a 3.5mm headphone jack alongside its duo of 6.3mm inputs and outputs, players can also use the MOD Dwarf for silent practice. Since the Dwarf is open-source, programmers can also design their own effects and sell them in the Plugin Store. This means that new plugins are appearing all the time, giving musicians a limitless range of effects and tools with which to experiment and develop their creativity.

About MOD

The company MOD was founded by Gianfranco Ceccolini, who presented a prototype of an open-source multi-effects pedal in 2010. This analogue-digital hybrid hardware features an intuitive graphical interface that allows effects to be exchanged and added using a plugin store. It was followed by a market launch in Brazil with subsequent financing via a Kickstarter campaign for the MOD Duo in 2014, which resulted in company headquarters in Germany and production via Schleicher Electronics in Berlin. In 2017, a cooperation with Cycling'74 (the developer of Ableton) followed on from this success, making it possible to integrate the MOD duo into Max/MSP. In February 2020, the MOD Dwarf was presented, which was also funded via a Kickstarter campaign within 24 hours.

Wireless control included

In addition to its three footswitches, the MOD Dwarf can also be controlled by connecting external hardware to its MIDI interface or control chain port. The latter of these two can be used to connect peripheral devices like the optionally available MOD footswitch. USB port A can be used to connect a MIDI keyboard, a Bluetooth dongle for remote control via computer, or a USB flash drive for storing backup files. When the MOD Dwarf is connected to a computer, the user can install and remove any unused plugins using the MOD Web GUI, with which they can also create banks of presets and entire pedalboards, as well as carrying out firmware updates.

Incredible piece of gear!
Rafadokp 01.09.2021
I'm stoked about getting my hands on this device. It's a solid brick and built with a far more rugged feeling than I expected. The packaging was very good and it includes a nice carrying case plus a nice-looking braided USB cable.
After a quick bit of exploring I'm patching some awesome stuff that is sounding killer and, as I came to discover as I started digging, I am still not even scratching the surface of what this box is capable of.
Bought it originally for my guitar but I have already fiddled with vocals by plugging my mic on the second input and also had some fun with synths and sequenced drums. All at the same time!!
In general, the sounds of the plugins are very good. You can get a bit overwhelmed by the huge amount of options, especially if you enable the community library, but I believe that is expected when using a community powered system like this. I've been to their forum and the other users were quite responsive and eager to help.
I feel like this thing will be a ton of fun to explore for a very long time. This is literally a Pandora's Box!!

Multi-functional, sturdy, great community
jetztgradnet 15.03.2023
I have two Dwarfs, one from Thomann, one from the crowd funding campaign and I love them!

The hardware is very sturdy, basically what you would expect from a guitar pedal meant for being stomped on. At the same time it can also easily be used on a desktop.

Using the Dwarf with a guitar provides everything you need to get a great sound: effects, amp simulations, two channels, balanced autio outputs, MIDI in and out, headphone out. This makes the little box a great addition to home rehearsal in quiet neighborhoods juszt as well as in a band rehearsal room, on stage or for the recording studio. All options covered.

The basic plugins are right on the box, additional ones can be loaded (many for free, some for a bit of additional cost) from the plugin store.

Mod Audio recently published a set of reverb plugins that alone would justify the pedal as a reverb effects box.

Any number of pedalboards can be created (or downloaded from a community page) using a beautiful browser-based user interface which can connect via USB, or - with an additional little USB dongle - via WLAN or Bluetooth, e.g. using a tablet or computer. Once installed or created, no computer or tablet is necessary anymore, switching between pedal boards or changing parameters can be done using the Dwarf's switches or rotary encoders while showing the current status on the built-in display.

So using it just as shipped provides everything one needs as a guitarist.

But it doesn't end here. The community in the forums is really friendly and helpful in guiding people and helping them to achieve the desired tone or pedal routings.

And besides the usual "guitar things" there are also synth plugins and other stuff available which can drive the sound to a totally different level. This usually requires a bit of experimentation though to achieve good results.

As big parts of the underlying firmware are open-source there are a wealth of community-driven plugins available (some in the beta plugin store).
More technically sophisticated people can even write their own plugins based on the LV2 standards widely used in the Linux audio comunity.

Mod Audio provides frequent updates for the device which constantly improves operations and provides new features, so the value of the device increases over time.

So while this whole review sounds like an ad for the Dwarf, this is really a great little device and the awesome community really works closely with Mod Audio to provide the best possible experience.

My experience
UrmasT 21.03.2022
I was very skeptical about buying the device. The device requires a lot of time and testing. Suitable for people who want to experiment. The result is very interesting and exciting. Today I am very satisfied with the purchase and dare to recommend to those who need different options when working with MIDI. As a block of guitar effect, it is not comparable to the Boss GT1000, but using the midi capabilities of the guitar is irreplaceable! Especially recommend using the block in the studio or recording. Unfortunately, the device is not suitable for the concert stage. There is a pause of a few seconds between the presets at the concert. And the main- very well thought out device interface when using a computer!

Good concept, very useful, minor drawbacks.
scjurgen 16.03.2023
The concept is a very good one and gives you a lot of flexibility that is usually only preserved to desktop plugin versions. A very sturdy piece of hardware. The quality of the plugins is mainly good enough for the stage. The only drawback was the quality of the power supply. It made a lot of noise. Exchanging it with a different power supply solved the issue. Would have been nice to have a standard 9V (Boss style). Over all, happy with it and part of my (now reduced) standard rig.
