The all-in-one practice amp

When a young musician is taking their first steps into the world of the "low end", it is especially important that their equipment doesn't saddle them with any unnecessary difficulties. And of course, budding Rock stars have simple demands: Effective features and foolproof functionality. This is where the Harley Benton HB-20B bass combo comes in - combining an amplifier and speaker in one compact unit, it gives players an ideal partner for practising at home. Equipped with a powerful three-band EQ section, the Harley Benton HB-20B is capable of generating a remarkable variety of sounds, which can all be properly tested out over a song or a drum groove if a playback device is connected via the amp's 3.5mm mini-jack input. Similarly, a headphone socket means that the next generation of bassists can rock around the clock without the neighbours or their parents complaining. This all-in-one package is available at an almost unbeatably low price, and it's possible to save even more money by buying the HB-20B as part of a bundle with an actual instrument.

Harley Benton HB-20B

The perfect start

As its name clearly suggests, a "combo" amp is one that combines both the amplifier and speaker(s) in a single unit. The Harley Benton HB-20B has such compact dimensions, measuring in at 380 x 340 x 175mm (less than 15" square), that it will fit under every table or in a gap on a bookshelf. And because it weighs just 7kg, even quite young bassists will find it easy to carry. Its 20W power output, coming from an 8" speaker, generates plenty of sound for playing at home or jamming with a guitarist and alongside the volume control, the internal three-band EQ (with bass, mid, and treble controls) gives players the chance to find their own individual sound. And at the touch of a button, a compressor can be activated that will tame unwanted level peaks, helping to protect the speaker.

Making life easier

While learning an instrument is a pleasure like no other, the process is not without its challenges, and it is easy to feel overwhelmed occasionally. Helping to forestall these additional difficulties is the prime directive of the Harley Benton HB-20B; its features are both essential and accessible for every beginner, and they are genuinely useful in practice. Very little prior experience or technical know-how is needed to get started and get rocking. On top of that, the Harley Benton HB-20B is so compact that it is easy for players to take with them: It can be effortlessly moved from room to room, or even carried on a bike rack. It's no slouch when it comes to connectivity, either, with sockets for both external audio and headphones.

About Harley Benton

Since 1998, the Harley Benton brand has been catering for the needs of countless guitarists and bassists. In addition to an extensive range of stringed instruments, Thomann's house brand also offers a wide choice of amplifiers, speakers, effect pedals, and other accessories. In total, the range includes over 1,500 products. Built by established names in the industry, all Harley Benton products combine quality and reliability at attractive and affordable prices. The continuous expansion of the range ensures that Harley Benton always provides new, exciting, and innovative products that keep players perfectly in tune with the musical world, day after day.

All night long

Music is impossible without a certain amount of noise - that goes without saying. This doesn't necessarily mean that everybody enjoys the same kinds of noise: Parents and siblings can be quick to knock on a young bassist's bedroom door, especially when it's already late at night. Similar problems are to be expected if the neighbours' walls are thin. To avoid annoying parents and neighbours alike, the Harley Benton HB-20B allows users to plug in their headphones - meaning there's nothing to stop them jamming all night long. And thanks to the integrated audio input, which can be used to connect a smartphone or other audio source to the combo, budding bassists can play along to backing tracks or their favourite songs.

Excellent for beginners
Daphne__ 23.01.2022
I bought this Amplifier with a combo of Electric bass, strap and standing equipment for the bass. Without being a professional bass player, I would say this excellent for beginners regarding the quality of sound, volume and the rest of effects. It is quite cheap and works perfectly fine in small places such as your private room or even bigger ones. I used it in a
experimental performance in a quite big space and I wasn't disappointed, neither the audience. I totally recommended this as a starter pack.

*The only negative part is that Aux input stopped working after a while and the headphones output didn't work from the beginning.

I would say that this is a valid option if bought as part of bass-bundle or something like that. Price is low, but so as the sound quality coming out of the speaker. It's usable as a bedroom amp, but the size of it, and especially the depth is not that great (which is expected for this speaker size and cabinet).
Aux input and speaker out I find most usable, as the sound there is decent, and it's great for practice. Overall considering the price, this is a usable peace of equipment for practicing through headphones, and if you want to let some sound out just for fun, but don't expect much more from it (if on a budget or in doubt if you will stick to the instrument, this is a decent buy...was my case...otherwise look for something with a bigger speaker and more expensive, I think it will make a significant difference in usability and overall experience).

Pros:
- Lightweight, AUX in, Headphones OUT, decent build quality

Cons:
- Small speaker, lacking depth, speaker not great tone, and burping on higher volume

B
Great practice amp
BenFlitz 23.07.2018
This bass amp is perfect for home use and recording, easy to use and has all the bassic bass tones you could want. The aux input is a great feature, allowing you to play along to a phone or mp3 player, very handy for learning songs. It is surprisingly loud for 20watts and sounds well, plenty of bass and not at all tinny like some small amps. It is well made with no rattles when playing and is very neat inside. If you are thinking about getting it then just do it! It's honestly great

It's OK

Well, I've got to be honest, this is not the best bass amplifier. There's a noticeable lack of bass and I think that's due to the small speaker size (correct me if I'm wrong). Of course, you don't necessarily need to have a lot of bass depending on what kind of music you're willing to play but bear in mind that this issue limits the number of applications.

On the other hand, I did like the built-in compressor. Man, this thing tightens up the sound. If you're on a budget as I was at the time, certainly give it a try, considering that the compression feature could incline you towards liking this amplifier.
