A powerhouse mixing console of compact size

The Behringer X32 instantly became a milestone among mid-priced digital mixing consoles when it first appeared, and it has lost none of its appeal since then. Its clear workflow and interactive user interface together with the sheer wealth of features on offer made a lasting impact on the market and delighted countless users along the way. The space-saving “Compact” version of the X32 has eight faders fewer – and is thus 27cm narrower – than its bigger brother, without any sacrifices in terms of functionality. The X32 allows 16 mic or line inputs and six AUX signals to be easily mixed in an intuitive fashion – whether live or in the studio. The X32 Compact’s internal plug-ins and modern network connectivity come into their own when mixing bands with extensive lineups, proving that it has the performance to match its looks. As a front-of-house mixing desk, it is easy to use and can be operated in conjunction with AES50 and Ultranet-capable devices such as stageboxes, monitor mixers, and speakers.

Behringer X32 Compact 32-Channel 16-Bus Digital Mixing Console

A digital genie

The Behringer X32 Compact is a ground-breaking digital mixer that comes at a budget-friendly price and has fulfilled a wide range of needs for many years. Motorised faders with 100mm travel? Check! XLR outputs? The X32 has eight of them. Backlit control elements? Done! And the digital mixer also allows engineers to record using an external USB drive, control the mix remotely from an iPad, and view their parameters in detail on its 7” TFT colour display. What is more, each channel strip features a mini-LCD screen with backlighting, ensuring a clear overview at all times, even in low light. The X32 Compact can even be expanded to an impressive 96 inputs using an AES50 bus and additional stageboxes. However, it is also ideal for use as a studio mixing desk thanks to its 32-in/32-out USB audio interface with DAW connectivity.

Complex lineup? No problem.

The Behringer X32 Compact is a fully equipped workhorse for small to medium-sized venues where the front-of-house mix and a clear selection of monitor mixes are needed from a single source without unnecessary complications. The X32 Compact also provides “cue lists” in which sequences of mix scenes can be stored and recalled – particularly helpful when it comes to complex and recurring mix setups, e.g. concert tours with multiple bands and performances in which the cast on stage is constantly changing. The mix workflow is also made easier by DCA groups, which allow key channels to be controlled using a single fader. The mix engineer can thus leave many organisational concerns to the X32 Compact’s clear workflow and concentrate fully on the sound.

About Behringer

The company, which was founded in Germany by Uli Behringer and now manufactures its products in China, has been known for affordable and great-value equipment since its very first product, the Studio Exciter F. An array of mixing consoles (such as the Eurodesk MX8000), signal processors, and later sound amplification and monitoring equipment, has made it possible for countless musicians to fit out their home studios, practice rooms, and mobile PAs within budget limits that were previously unthinkable. The acquisition of other companies, including Midas, Klark Teknik, and TC Electronic, meant that new product groups were added - and also resulted in the technical expertise of these companies being incorporated into product development.

An "enlightening" all-rounder

The Behringer X32 Compact is an impressive front-of-house mixing console which covers virtually all of the “most wanted” features that are offered by digital mixers in its price range today. It also goes without saying that the channels’ “Send” outputs can be used to create monitor mixes, which means a second mixing console for the monitor sound is no longer required, and its backlit controls make this all-in-one tool easy to use when mixing in dark surroundings such as clubs and concert halls. The latter function is at the core of the X32 Compact’s looks – from the TFT colour screen and illuminated dials through to the mini-LCD screens for each channel, which can be assigned various background colours and show both designations and basic symbols, making each channel instantly identifiable.

Nothing else in this price range can touch it

Like other reviews say, leave all your previous hangups about Behringer at the door, they have really changed their game with the X32 line of products. The build quality is excellent: the dials, sliders and buttons seem very hard wearing. Once you get the whole feel about the flexible mix bus workflow this desk uses (and a lot of higher-end digital consoles use), it is an absolute joy to use.

The preamps are absolutely worlds apart from Behringer's previous offerings, big and bold sounding without going dull. They have a tendency to start to sound a little thin if you need to crank the gain, but I've been assured this is a typical quirk of Midas designed preamps. Digital scribble-strips at this price point is just plain unheard of!

Bought this with two S16 digital snake modules, effectively doubling the analogue I/O. I silly cannot believe that this system was purchased for relatively little money and the quality is retained. Fantastic. If Behringer can shake off their historical 'cheap&nasty' stigma, this will be the product line that completely obliterates the competition at this price range, although it's doing a pretty good job already.

Oh, and be very careful with the latched XLR inputs on the X32 and S16s. There have been reports of XLR connectors (with the little latch 'window') getting stuck in there. I have had other equipment suffer this issue and I have avoided this by using Switchcraft or Neutrik XX series XLR connectors (or ones without the 'window').

E
Affordable all round digital mixer
EdwinB 29.12.2020
Use: I am currently using or have used the Behringer X32 in my Home studio, for my band practice and gigs. I have also used it for some very high end Club concerts.

Clarity: The signal quality of the preamps is very clean and transparent. There is no signal disturbance on recordings. The vocals and instruments sound exactly the way they are which is very important while track recording. There is no colour to the sound, when one compares it to the Midas M32 which has a fatter/thicker sound.

Pros: 1. Very portable. Can be easily carries in a soft case in the car.
2. The software is very easy to use and understand. The firmware updates kept improving. Right now I can say that X32 offers software capabilities like some higher end digital mixing desks.
3. The Behringer line of products offers some excellent hardware integration peripherals with the X32 to customise your audio network with other hardware devices.
4. The screen size is very good for navigation.
5. The price point is very good compared to other digital mixers.

Cons: Nothing to complain so far...:)

Comprehensibility:1. Very good desk for beginners as it is easy to use and understand.
2. Very useful in studio environments as you can get good visual feedback from the desk.
2.

K
Fabulous but flawed
Kevin638 26.07.2013
Firstly Don't be out off this product because of previous opinions and biases about Behringer this is a completely new ball game. As soon as I unpacked and saw it I thought wow !!! this is different, it ouses quality and sophistication. There is no in depth manual available yet but frankly I got it going without even looking at the instructions, to go through all it's features would be beyond a simple review but I particularly liked the effects section which really does have eight full effects racks that are divided into 4 send and return types and 4 insert types. On the down side and I suspect this is because I do a lot of very simple shows with simple setups you can only control the first eight inputs with the first eight sliders so if you want to control input nine you have to start layer hopping. For me the most basic of all basic setups would be sixteen inputs controlled by sixteen sliders and I can't understand why it can't do this (although Joe Sanborn of Behringer has said he will ask if there can be a firmware update to change it) I'm sending mine back for this reason alone, everything else is fantastic. I suspect that sound engineers who have worked on digital desks a lot will have no problem with this but to me potentially having to control forty inputs with eight faders and having to hop through nine layers to do it is too much.
----> The firmware has been updated and you can now use all 16 faders as input if you so choose.

ES
Finally got one of these….
Eddie Simmins 28.02.2022
It’s taken a long time to graduate from a second (or third?) hand four channel mixer to this beast! However, it’s been worth it - as far as amateur sound production is concerned I now have no excuses! Other than perhaps there are so many options and features it can be a bit bewildering- which together with a frankly mediocre user manual makes it a steep learning curve. Fortunately there are lots of good people on YouTube who’ve been through the same challenge! Overall it’s a brilliant bit of kit
