Vater Mike Mangini Wicked Piston

When I first tried these drum sticks, I really liked the way they were designed and how the weight distribution felt in my hand.
I play metal, and I have always preferred longer and thicker drum sticks. For most of my playing time, I've been using Vic Firth 5B Extreme.
The design of these drum sticks really made a big difference in the feel. The thickening between the middle and the tip of the stick means that the part where you hold them is not too thick, but the part that hits the rim when you do a rim shot is thicker than regular drum sticks.

Using these sticks made me feel that all my snare and tom hits were somewhat more powerful.

However, the last batch that I ordered has disappointed me a little bit.
First of all, not all the pairs feel well matched. There was one pair, where one of the drum sticks felt so much lighter than all the other Wicked Pistons that I bought. On one drum stick, half of the head fell off after just few hits on the ride cymbal. And I feel like the rim shots eat through the drum sticks too fast.

Unfortunately, quality seems to be an issue

I will give these drum sticks another chance next time I buy, hoping that whatever quality issues I came across were just something temporary. Because I'd really hate to have to switch drum sticks again

I used to play with the 2B Thomas Lang signatures reinforced with some tape. Moving to these ones I found a less 'rude' and more precise approach/sound to the drums, but still a very powerful (if not more powerful) hit since they are longer and the weight is balanced in the upper part, a thing that I personally love.

After more than 10 hours of metal playing on an acoustic drumset (including 2 concerts) they still look as solid as the new ones (just a bit of scratches due to the usage)

MMs agiles, dynamisches und absolut einzigartiges Schlagzeugspiel fasziniert mich schon seit Jahren. Er erntet viel Kritik dafür, viele seiner Grooves, Fills und Drumpassagen was die reine Koordination angeht, so schwierig wie möglich umzusetzen. Beispielsweise ist absolut typisch für ihn, dass er bei einem normalen 4/4 Groove, wo sich jeder andere Drummer mal etwas "ausruhen" würde, die Hi-Hat links und rechts alternierend spielt und auch nicht ungern mal einhändige Trommelwirbel einbaut. Kritische Stimmen beklagen also, er opfert den begehrten effortless Sound dafür, alles möglich komplex zu koordinieren - und das mag sogar teilweise stimmen - aber als Drummer muss man die Komplexität, die Mangini an den Tag legt einfach würdigen.

Nun endlich zu den Sticks! :D Was mich extrem überrascht hat war, dass diese Sticks (ganz anders als z.B. das Signature Modell von Danny Carey!) ihren Schwerpunkt zum Kopf hin haben. Es gibt so wenige solcher Stöcke, dass sich das zuerst sehr seltsam anfühlt, da man mit dem Rebound und dem ziemlich klobigen Spielgefühl erstmal klarkommen muss. Wenn man dann aber sieht, wie MM die Stöcke hält, nämlich fast in der Mitte des Stocks, wird man nach und nach damit warm. Ich nutze die Stöcke sehr gern zum Double Stroke üben. Eine sehr gute Challenge! Volle Kaufempfehlung!

Des baguettes il en existe de toutes les longueurs, poids, matériau, forme de l'olive, etc ... en général une baguette signature ça veut juste dire qu'un artiste a posé son nom sur un modèle déjà existant, on change un petit détail insignifiant et c'est tout.

Je n'ai pas d'intérêt particulier pour Mike Mangini mais quand on me parle d'une "révolution" je suis toujours curieux de vérifier si il y a vraiment quelque chose de nouveau ou pas, au premier coup d'oeil on voit bien l'originalité mais je n'étais pas certain que ça changerait significativement la donne.

J'ai testé pas mal de baguettes différentes à mes débuts en batterie, avant de me décider pour des 2B dans un premier temps, puis j'ai définitivement adopté les X5A de Vic Firth.

Les baguettes Wicked Piston sont assez déroutantes au début, le poids n'est pas réparti de la même façon que sur une baguette standard ce qui a deux conséquences : on fourni moins d'effort pour un volume sonore équivalent et on se sent forcé à mieux tenir les baguettes en main. Ce dernier point suffit déjà à rendre ces baguettes très intéressantes pour les débutants ou ceux comme moi qui veulent corriger leur façon de les tenir (je finis souvent par tenir les baguettes par leur bout uniquement). Par contre la sensation du poids plus important au bout de la baguette est un peu déroutant au début. La forme de l'olive (et le poids) rendent l'attaque plus nette, sur les cymbales on a ping bien défini et qui percera plus facilement en live. Le col est épais, massif, c'est inhabituel mais le constat est sans appel : ces baguettes ont une durée de vie bien supérieure à mes X5A qui cassent systématiquement à cet endroit. D'habitude je change de baguettes toutes les 4 à 6 semaines, j'ai acheté ma première paire de wicked piston il y a 3 mois et elle n'ont toujours pas cassé, les olives commencent à être un peu abimées d'où cet achat préventif mais je vais surement les user encore un peu avant de changer.

En résumé, je pense que tout batteur un minimum curieux devrait tester une paire de ces baguettes qui ne sont pas plus chères que la moyenne et qui offrent une expérience différente. Bien sur ça ne conviendra pas à tout le monde, elle sont plutôt taillées pour le rock, et sont plus difficiles à utiliser à faible volume avec un jeu très nuancé et fin. Mais elles ont le mérite de proposer quelque chose de nouveau ET utilisable à long terme :)
