Flexible monitoring options

With the Monicon XL, Palmer introduces a comprehensive monitor controller including a level meter and two headphone amplifiers. It has connection options for a total of three pairs of speakers. This allows monitoring via three different monitor systems, offering even greater control over your mixes. The Monicon XL also includes an analogue signal path that is characterised by its zero latency. In addition to an unbalanced line and cue output, there are three adjustable balanced monitor outputs on the back of the monitor controller, the sum of which can also be routed to other devices. On the input side, it also has two jack sockets, an RCA AUX-in, and an S/PDIF connection. The Monicon XL is thus suitable for flexible and professional monitoring of mixes.

Individual configurations

The user interface of the Monicon XL is clearly laid out: In the centre is the large volume control surrounded by two buttons that switch the mix to "mute" or "mono". Above it is the eight-increment level meter, which is designed for both channels and can be calibrated to three different values: +4, +10, or +18dBu. In the section to the left, the inputs are selected and there is also a volume control for the AUX input. On the right, the outputs are activated. If you want, you can assign the input signals to the cue output. Below this section, the Dim and Talk functions are used to set the volume. On the far left, you can change the settings for the two headphone amplifiers.

Latency-free monitoring

The Monicon XL offers a wide range of monitoring options and is aimed at all sound engineers who want to maintain full control over their mix. The fully analogue circuitry makes monitoring latency-free and prevents sound colouration - making it particularly suitable for professional applications. There is even an integrated talkback microphone with adjustable volume on board. All of the Monicon XL's outputs are in a 6.3mm jack format. The two headphone sockets also allow recording from the mixing room. In addition, the Monicon XL was modelled on the ergonomic shape of a console, which makes it particularly comfortable to operate.

About Palmer

Palmer is one of seven brands belonging to Adam Hall GmbH from Neu-Ansbach in Hessen, Germany, which was founded in 1975. Starting as a manufacturer of robust flight cases, Adam Hall GmbH has developed into a global manufacturer and distributor of event equipment. In addition to studio and PA equipment, the company also produces LED lighting systems, moving lights, cables, protective cable conduits, stands, and stage systems. The Palmer brand is known for marrying analogue circuitry with digital technology. In this way, new innovations are developed that meet the highest demands. The Palmer portfolio includes DI boxes, line isolators, speaker simulations, controllers, and studio monitors.

Mono-friendly controller

The integrated correlation meter provides information about the phase difference between the left and right channel. This makes it quick and easy to determine whether the current mix is mono-compatible. The summed mono output on the rear panel allows the connection of a subwoofer or monitor for listening in mono. The fixed, high-quality controls and connectors ensure interference-free switching of signals with a distortion factor of 0.002% at a bandwidth of 20Hz to 20kHz. The maximum input level of the Monicon XL is 20dBu, while the output impedance is 600 Ohms and the input impedance is 10 kOhms using balanced signal sources and 5 kOhms using unbalanced ones.

Excellent controller - almost perfect
Kwade 06.01.2022
When I was researching monitor controllers, I really couldn't find many reviews for this unit. I bought this based on the huge range of features, and the styling doesn't hurt. I think it's a really well thought out design that reminds me of the 70's for some reason. Form factor is excellent, meter and correlation meters are incredibly helpful, buttons are great quality and the volume knob is perfect. Being able to quickly compare and combine monitor playback as efficiently as this unit does, has been invaluable. Also, a small detail, but the fact that the LEDs beneath the button glow a deeper "streetlight" orange, is actually really pleasant in low light when mixing into the night.

A couple of small downsides to be aware of: On my unit, the talkback signal is way too hot. Even at the lowest volume, it is barely tolerable. I contacted Palmer regarding this and they acknowledged it was an issue they were trying to fix, and if I shipped my unit to them they would repair it, but it wasn't worth the hassle to me as I don't use this feature too much. Another small detail is at the lowest audible volume, there is audio in my right speaker and none in my left. Unless mixing at barely audible volumes, I can't see this being an issue, but it is an observation. Final point is not a problem, but more of a feature I think would make this a perfect unit in my eyes; Optical ADAT connection. There is a S/PDIF stereo input, but the ability to link more analog devices through this unit would be amazing.

Still, these issues aside, it is an excellent monitor controller and even more so when factoring in the price.

A
Great Monitor Controller for the Price
Anonymous 04.01.2022
Bought to replace a second hand Mackie Big Knob that went bang and this ticks all the boxes that did in a smaller, better looking package.

Works perfectly for me in my home setup, switching between Recording PC, Work PC and a Yamaha MusicCast WXAD-10 I use to listen to music from my phone and output to my KRK Rokit 5s and Avantone Mix Cube.

I have seen some comments on the sound and if I really turn things up there's a slight electrical buzz audible but it hasn't affected anything I do on a day to day basis in the slightest so for most home/amateur users I can't see any issues.

All the important features are there - talkback, dim, mute, mono, monitor/input switching and a couple of headphone outs. It's a really versatile unit for the price with a lot of flexibility, I'm pretty impressed and would definitely recommend this unit!

d
i really like that monitor controller
diggediduderules 14.05.2023
i was looking for a monitor controller for my little studio i was just building up and tried that one for the setup. my wish was to control my two different setups for monitoring. it is doing it's job very well. The main task is accomplished very well. the device is very high quality build. good and handy knobs let the device control very well. the best feature is the ability to connect two different headphones with separate monitoring control. my previous device could'nt do that - so from now on the artist and me can control separately the volume of the headphones. i really appreciate that. so another cool thing about that device is, that you can check the mono mix on the fly. just pressing a knob build in the device is letting me check the mix in mono. this is a very good feature!
i would recommend the device for everybody who is looking for a payable monitor controller for their new studio oder homesetup!
lovely, thanks palmer!
