Sampler

Samplers revolutionized the music of the 20th century. Will they do the same for your music?
Sampler

1. Introduction

Sampling is as common and everyday to music production as making coffee or driving a car. With the help of a sampler you can capture sounds of any kind to be used in your own productions. Our chapter ''Origin'' in this guide shows that it wasn't always this easy. Of course you will also learn a lot about the changes in technology and uses that sampling has undergone since the early 80's. Without sampling, musical styles like Hip Hop, Techno and House would have never been created, but sampling is also being used and experimented with more and more in ''traditional'' music styles like Jazz, Classical, and Avant-Garde. We will see that sampling is still in full swing and alive!

On the following pages we would like to give you an overview of the features and differences in hardware and software samplers. The following guide should be able to help you choose the right device for your needs. This topic spans multiple pages - You can select a more specific area of interest via the table of contents at the end of this page.
