Great for the price
TommyVee 15.12.2015
Really, at this price, there's nothing bad to say about the R144. I used this microphone during a recording session for a number of instruments, and really put it through its paces, through both an SPL Goldmike 9844 and ART Pro MPA ii

Guitar Amp: Gives a really nice, smooth sound ad has great lows. The mids were a bit peaky, but this was easily EQ'd out

Saxophone: Used in conjunction with an SM57, had the R144 about 12 inches from the valves and got a lovely harmonic sound that blended nicely with the direct tone from the bell

Backing Vocals: I wanted a different sound for the backings so used this and it complimented the singer. For a darker tone I used the rear of the mic.

All in all this was a great purchase, but make sure you have a nice clean, low noise pre-amp as they need a lot of gain to drive them.

Difficult to use without a specialist pre-amp
rshirlow 08.04.2019
I have found it difficult to make the best of this type of microphone without a very expensive specialist pre-amp. Neither my Presonus interface nor my Behringer tube pre-amp gave enough amplification without introducing far too much noise. Recording tracks were frequently unusable, which is a shame cause the underlying tone with acoustic instruments was very good. If you want to use a ribbon mic, you need to buy a expensive quality pre-amp, preferably one designed for this application.

Incredible quality
Nel. 09.05.2017
I was looking for a mic to get that warm sound from an open back cabinet. This microphone brought the "missing warmth" into the recordings. Perfect for that Blues sweet sound from your AC30 or Fender Reverb.

The microphone came in a case with foam, a sticker, some booklets and a anti-shock mount.

Incredible quality for the price.
