The Mooer Ocean Machine II is the signature pedal of Canadian guitarist, singer, and composer Devin Townsend; this is already the second edition, with a revised colour scheme and USB interface. This multifunctional delay and reverb effect pedal's three footswitches make it easy, almost intuitive, to use, and allow musicians to create both more conventional and uniquely atmospheric guitar sounds. The most complex sounds are generated by combining the unit's one reverb and two delay sections – of course, these elements can also be used separately. From simple slapback delays and rhythmic echoes to seemingly infinite reverb tails, endless fun can be had with the Mooer Ocean Machine II crafting individual soundscapes. These creations can be saved as one of 24 presets, which can then be accessed on the device itself or via MIDI and modified in real time using the expression pedal.
The Mooer Ocean Machine II combines two independent delay effects with a total of 15 algorithms – nine per section. Creative musicians can move from simple analogue and tape echo simulations to reverberations modulated using bitcrushers, pitch shifters, and distorted sound fragments – the Ocean Machine has a genuinely distinctive sonic palette. The reverb effects are also flexible, with eight algorithms ranging from simulations of the most common room types to more unusual sounds, including shimmer control, which adds overtones to the reverb that really seem to make it sparkle. In preset mode, users can switch between eight banks of three presets using the footswitches. In play mode, the effects can be switched and combined independently of each other, or chained in any order. This updated version of the Ocean Machine now has a colour screen, making it easier for guitarists on stage to keep track of their effects and access more advanced settings.
Strictly speaking, the Mooer Ocean Machine II is designed for guitarists. However, thanks to its stereo inputs and outputs, ping-pong mode, and the ease with which it handles line level signals, this powerful little pedal is also ideal for keyboardists and producers interested in creating ambient sounds. Experimental musicians can give free rein to their creativity, while still appreciating how practical the Ocean Machine is to operate, thanks to its intuitive controls, variable effect sequences, and the fact that its huge range of effects can all be changed in real time without any interference in the echoes and reverb. In no time at all, input signals can be modified to create sweeping soundscapes. Producers of electronic music and synth enthusiasts alike should have the Mooer Ocean Machine II on their radar, especially considering it's available at such an attractive price.
Mooer is based in the Chinese city of Shenzhen and has been making products for guitarists since 2010, which include compact single pedals through to multi-effects units and compact amplifiers. The company initially produced a range of mini pedals before making perhaps its most significant breakthrough in 2016 with the sophisticated Ocean Machine delay pedal, which was designed in collaboration with Devin Townsend. Mooer's product range now also includes solutions that feature amp modelling, IR-based speaker simulation, and matching equalisers, and the company's focus remains firmly on the use of digital technology.
The Mooer Ocean Machine II was expressly designed for live use. When playing on stage, the presets and the tap tempo function for the delay effects (with up to 2,000ms delay time), as well as the looper with an extended recording time of 120 seconds, will prove more than just practical extras. The freeze function, which is triggered when the footswitch is held down, unleashing a sustained expanse of reverb, is a very tasty little treat. Of course, even when playing live, the pedal doesn't necessarily have to be placed on the floor: It can just as easily be set up on a table or mixing desk, making it easier to manipulate its clearly colour-coded controls in real time (this, too, is also possible via an expression pedal). Either way, the Mooer Ocean Machine II comes strongly recommended both for more traditional keyboardists and experimental sound pioneers. Whoever is using it, the Ocean Machine is sure to be a source of inspiration when composing new music, making it easy for musicians to bring even their most creative sonic ideas to life.
