Much more than a mere wooden box

Not everyone is aware that percussion instruments do not always need a taut membrane in order to make themselves heard. Because unlike membranophones, the cajón, a member of the idiophone family of instruments, does not need a batter head. Instead, the playing surface consists of a wooden plate, which, together with the body and the resonance plate, produces the instrument's typical rattling, percussive sound. In the case of the Millenium Blackbox Cajón, the playing surface is supplemented by a device with steel strings on the back, which, instead of a rattling sound, produces a buzzing sound that comes very close to that of a snare drum.

Great customisable sound

The Millenium Blackbox Cajón measures 30 x 30 x 48 cm, which are today’s standard dimensions. Thanks to the rubber feet, it is also secured against slipping. The body of the Millenium Blackbox is made of maple, and the playing surface is made of willow wood. Together with the two-string sizzle effect on the back of the playing surface, this produces an appealing sound with a solid bass range and a buzzing snare. Moreover, an Allen screw on the underside of the instrument also allows the sound to be customised by adjusting the string tension. The matching hex key can be neatly stored in a holder inside the cajón.

The perfect start

The Millenium Blackbox Cajón is a pleasant-sounding entry-level instrument that leaves nothing to be desired in terms of workmanship, design, and purchase price. The possibility of making adjustments to the sound generation is definitely not par for the course in this price segment, so the Millenium Blackbox by no means has to hide from more expensive competitors. Since a branded cajón can easily cost four to five times as much as the Millenium Blackbox, this instrument is highly recommended for everyone looking for an inexpensive box drum with a good sound.

About Millenium

Millenium is one of Thomann’s in-house brands and has been an integral part of the store’s range since 1995. More than 800 products – from drums and percussion through to accessories such as microphone stands, racks, and recording workstations – bear the Millenium label. These products are made by renowned companies who also manufacture products for other well-known brands. Since they are imported directly from the factory without any further distributors or sales companies, they can be sold at particularly attractive prices. Incidentally, one in every four Thomann customers has already purchased at least one Millenium product.

With hands and feet…

A cajón can be played in many different ways. Depending on what kind of sound you are looking for, you can use hands, brushes, and possibly even pedals to achieve the right result. Cajons are excellent rhythmic accompanying instruments that have become established in many musical genres and can be used in a variety of ways. For example, they often serve as a substitute for the snare and bass drums in unplugged sessions. In addition, the low weight and small dimensions make a cajón an extremely pleasant companion on the road.

I was a bit too optimistic.
Nickname Time 02.07.2020
I got this guy at the same time as a cheap banjo, all based on reviews, and really saw both sides of trying to do stuff on the cheap. The banjo looks, feels and sounds like a much more expensive instrument. The cajon looks, feels and sounds like the cheapest cajon I could find. Sadly I think it's going to be used more as a stool than anything. I'm going to have a go at making it a bit better myself, new snare etc, maybe repaint it...

Problems in the order in which I saw them...

The look - probably from the photos this is part of the attraction of this cajon. Those three stripes through, they look like they were made with bad masking tape painted over with a roller and taken off too soon. The edges are terrible. And the paint over the whole instrument has drip marks.

The sound - the snare is awful. It's a guitar string stretched around a nail and pressed loosely into the back of the face of the cajon.
I know this is one way to do the snare, possibly the oldest and most traditional, but it's done very badly. You can always just hear the note of the string, as though it was ringing out open on a guitar. I've experimented taping it down in various spots, which has helped a bit, but not enough. Then if you want to use your foot for pitch control on the face of the cajon, the relative position of the string changes and it rings out louder than ever. I'm looking into how I can fix it, thinking probably of removing it and screwing in half a drum snare.

I'd not even recommend this for a beginner or a child. I think the risk of putting that person off the instrument is too great. For context, this is the first negative review I have ever left of a product I've bought new ... I'm not holding it to unrealistic standards, I promise.

M
Actualy realy good!
Mancunian 20.10.2022
For a cheap Cajon, this realy doesn't disapoint. I wanted a cajon for soms acoustic practice with the band and i'm surprised at how loud this actualy is. The bass sound is nice and full and the snare hit will cut through.

Build quality wise it's not bad. The lines on the front aren't flush with the black wood, that took me by surprise a bit, and the edges are a bit sharp there, but the rest of the Cajon is built well, the edges are smooth and i didn't see any blemishes in the finish.

It's also surprisingly sturdy. I'm a bit of a heavy guy and was afraid that this "cheap thing" would not handle my weight that well, but everything has worked out just fine, it takes the weight when sitting on it like a champ.

Only disclaimer that i was a bit surprised about, was the message that the feet could leave permanent marks on the surface you play on and that it's recommended to place the cajon on a rug or something.

All in all, very happy, great product, and would buy again if disaster strikes one day.

SP
Good for the price and sturdy
Stan Pac 05.01.2022
I cannot compare it to other cajons. This is my first one.
The sound quality is ok. Even a little bit over expectations considering the price.
The build quality is not so good. Feels a bit cheap. But in fact it is cheap, so nothing to complain about.
I am a heavy person, almost 150kg. I was concerned this black box will fall apart with me sitting on it. But it didn't. It seems to be sturdy enough to deal with me.
Overall a pretty decent instrument for a very attractive price.

t
A cajon with an okay sound but a poor build quality
tomtomssi 14.03.2018
I decided I wanted try out playing a cajon and, well, decided to go with the cheap option. Still, I expected more than what the Millenium BlackBox Cajon delivered.

The product arrived well packaged as they always do when ordering from Thomann. Upon opening the package, I was greeted with cajon that had cracks in the paint and dents in the wood. The paint on the body was cracking in multiple places and the wood was visible underneath. The three lines on the body have black paint spilled around the edges and it looks horrible.

The sound doesn't really match the sound samples. The snare sound is pretty decent but the bass sound is not up to par. Both the bass and snare have a crackling sound that doesn't feel right.

Overall, I think this cajon looks and feels like its made as a child's school project. Poor paint job, dents in the body and a crackling sound. The build quality is borderline broken.

I would advise you to consider adding a few bucks to your budget and buy a better product.

3/5 for the sound, 1/5 for the quality.
