I have used this head in conjunction with an Aquarian Super Kick II on the batter side. My main use is recording, so the sound has to be right at the source - and this reso head really delivers in that area.
After changing the head, I noticed that the sound of the bass drum was much more defined than before. So I was able to take out some of the damping I had used previously. Now by "defined" I mean that the sound is deep, but not boomy. The damping I had put in the shell (several blankets) had been necessary because I always got too much sustain and boominess out of the bassdrum. With this head, these problems are gone. I just keep one blanket in there lightly touching the batter had to make it more snappy.
I also noticed that my recordings are now clearer of unwanted mid-frequencies that had always contributed to that cardboard sound of the kick that is unwanted in modern music.
Now the 5 inch hole might be a little small if you're regularly micing up the inside of the shell and need to move the mic around a lot. I personally prefer micing just in or outside the hole, so that's not really a problem.
All in all, I highly recommend this head.
