EBow EBow Plus

1573

Effect for guitarDespite its frequent use in classics of rock and pop history, the EBow plays an outsider's role in the large pool of guitar effects - often heard, rarely recognised is the motto here.

Yet this inconspicuous little helper offers what many guitarists have been dreaming of since time immemorial: sustain, unlimited and virtually without end.

But even beyond that, previously unknown worlds of sound open up to the experienced EBower on the guitar. In this way, violin and flute-like tones, synthesiser sounds or ghost melodies in the style of Steve Hackett find their way into the repertoire of the experimental electric guitarist.

  • The EBow generates a magnetic field, causing the string to vibrate endlessly.
  • Now additionally with "Harmonic" mode
  • Power supply via a 9 V battery (not included)
  • Incl. instructions and bag

A violin bow for electric guitarists

Since the 1970s, the EBow has made unique sonic contributions to a wide variety of styles. To this day, it has lost none of its fascination for genre-bending musicians, because the sound it makes is so difficult to reproduce. That being said, the way the "electric bow" works is relatively simple: A magnetic field generated on the underside of the small device's ergonomic plastic housing causes the guitar string being played to vibrate. This results in an enduring and even tone, much like a "real" bow produces when playing stringed instruments. The EBow Plus has a harmonic mode that amplifies the overtone vibration of the first octave to the fundamental note played, thus significantly expanding a musician's sonic spectrum.

Completely new modes of expression

The EBow Plus creates unique guitar or electric bass sounds that have been variously described as resembling a violin, a flute, or a synthesizer. The guide rail on the underside of the EBow Plus ensures clean tracking, and as such the best possible performance, guaranteeing that it sits perfectly on the string being played. The blue power status LED that comes on when the device is operational is also helpful, in that it shines brightly enough to keep the strings visible even in dark surroundings. A 9V battery supplies the Ebow with power – eliminating the need for a power supply unit and additional cables.

Perfect for sonic explorers

The EBow Plus is a deceptively creative tool, providing new sources of inspiration for musicians looking for new ways to express themselves through their favourite stringed instrument. Effects such as reverb and delay, as well as an overdrive option for the signal itself, also present further opportunities for exploring an instrument's sonic limits. The sound generated by the EBow Plus is quite unique, and difficult to reproduce authentically. Despite this, it doesn't require much in the way of familiarisation: Simply set the switch to Normal or Harmonic mode, place the device over the desired string, and it's ready to go.

About Heet Sound Products

The company Heet Sound Products was founded iin LA in 1969 by Greg Heet. Its only product, in constant production for over five decades now, is the EBow: a small plastic device which generates an electromagnetic field, causing the strings of a guitar or bass to vibrate, and creating a tone unique in the world of music. In addition to this primary function, the current generation – the EBow Plus – also has a harmonic mode, which emphasises the overtone vibration of the first octave rather than the fundamental vibration of the string, thus further expanding the ways in which it can be used.

For that very special touch

The EBow Plus will add a very special touch to any performance thanks to its characteristic sound. It is an almost unlimited source of creativity, especially when improvising with the guitar or bass. Regardless of whether the sound is unprocessed or enhanced with effects, the fast and clean tracking of the string being played will deliver results that invariably sound surprising, often even amazing. The sound generation is also virtually latency-free, so that even rhythmic riffs and lines can be reproduced cleanly. The EBow Plus is supplied with a carrying pouch and a player's guide containing many tips for the practical use of this extraordinary device.

Exactly What You'd Expect, and then a Little More
CammojoDragon 04.08.2017
You probably know already what to expect from an EBow, and it's exactly that; a simple tool for creating infinite, violin-like sustain on a guitar. It does that beautifully! I bought one to add drones and string-quartet-esque harmonies to my music, and in the process of doing this, I came to realise the EBow is a touch more versatile than you might expect. There's quite a few secrets to getting some really varied stuff out of it!

For one, the device has two modes; one encourages more natural sustain, simply extending the note you play, but there's another mode that encourages rich upper harmonics to come into play. Now that's where things can get REALLY crazy!

How the EBow reacts with the pickups on your guitar is also very interesting; I'm not sure what exactly sure what about the pickups that causes this variation, but I've noticed on my own SSS guitar that the sustain is very mellow and ambient with my middle pickup sat beneath it, and bring out much more of the rich overtones and feedback-like sounds over the neck PUP. This likely won't be the same for you, but my point is, experiment! It's also worth noting that you don't have to have the pickup you're using with the EBow selected for it to work; yet another piece of the puzzle to solve!

I have two very minor complaints; the first is that the EBow itself is made out of a very flimsy feeling plastic (though I'm quietly grateful for this, as it feels surprisingly weighty once you get a battery into it!). The second is more a cautionary note than a complaint, but I feel you should be aware that the EBow causes the string to vibrate really very aggressively, which will likely mean that you will find it quite a bit louder than you usually are on your current setup. Again, not exactly an issue, but if you're in a very grumpy-neighbour-intensive area, I'd lower the volume a tad!

All in all, however, the EBow has made a fine addition to my ambient arsenal; there aren't many options to get this kind of sound, and the EBow sells for loose change compared to a special pickup system, and is a bit more unique than the effects pedals that try and capture the sound. Recommended!

J
E-Bow plus
Jimsim 15.04.2020
This is a simple yet unique product and there are many ways to use it. Include in the E-Bow is a manual that shows you different movement produces different type of sound. The build is light and compact, is made of plastic but does not feel cheap. It also comes with a small pouch. It uses 9v battery (not included). It only has two features - one gives you a more natural sounding sustain, the other is rich harmonic-like sounding sustain.

Ebow is said to supposedly create a violin-like sustain on guitar, it kinda does that to some extent but honestly, it is something entirely different. The string auto-vibrates constantly and that is what creates the sustain and boy, it sounds good. You can run scales on one string but there is a small learning curve because the string vibrates so much, you have to time and control your finger movements.

E-bow is so versatile and there are so many ways to experiment with it to come up with unique sustain-like sound. It does take a while to learn to control the sound, and the grip/movement/when to lift/etc. on the string is important. Point is - to experiment!

A
I just love it
Anonymous 25.02.2017
I bought the e-bow just to try it. To tell the truth I saw a few bands performing with it, and I got interested.

Since I'm using ambiances in my music, specially in my next job, it seemed to be an interesting piece of equipment to have. At the moment I'm using Ableton, which is absolutely OK, but I wanted something more "human-made" if you catch my drift...

The thing is that I was absolutely impressed by the playability of the e-bow. It's really fun to play, and it has opened an unexpected new soundscape for me and my project. It works with guitars and basses. I'm already incorporating it in my music as a 'whole instrument'!!!

Another good thing is that there's a lot of tutorial, info, techniques available on youtube, etc, so it's quite easy to learn and one can start enjoying it very quickly.

Very happy with it, indeed. 100% recommend it.

D
The classic EBow
DrCheese 10.09.2021
Most of you will know what you are getting with this - the classic EBow and like most reasonably recent iterations, two modes: 'standard' and 'harmonic'. In actuality, both modes tend to drive harmonics above the fundamental of the note held, but 'harmonic' will always drive a harmonic one or two steps higher. It is not possible to be precise about this because it depends somewhat on the gauge and tension of the string, the note fretted and the position of the EBow along the string. The two modes are accessed via a three-position switch. The centre position turns it off. A blue LED on the front warns you when the EBow is on.
This EBow comes with several extras: a solid reusable box, a drawstring faux-velvet pouch, many stickers and a remarkably long instruction manual. The manual goes into some depth about playing techniques.
In short, this is still good value and you'll know you'll be getting the classic EBow. There are a range of experimental possibilities beyond the obvious applications with an EBow - I found that it is possible to sustain a tuning fork with an EBow!
