A unique little device that does far more than it's simple exterior and tiny size suggest. Of course there are compromises - lots of tiny controls and patch points crammed into a small space make it fiddly to use sometimes. But you have to set that against the price and the fact it does something different from other drum boxes. The closest headline description I can give is to say it does rhythm sounds in a kind of "west coast" way. It's designed for experimenting - you're encouraged to discover sounds and patterns rather than write them. Pretty much anything can be patched to anything else without damage: some patches will just sound horrible but then you find something inspired. If you want a mini X0X this is not for you, but if you want something to push you in a new direction then give it a go. For the money it's a fantastic amount of fun.

Pocket Synth

I do love this fiddly little thing. It is completely non-intuitive and impossible to recreate patches on but every time I turn it on, something wonderful comes out... use it with a decent reverb or chorus effect and get a surprisingly big sound.
The mini patch cables are a bit annoying, especially in dim rooms but it is testament to how compelling a machine it is that I found one of the cables in my bed!
Got the chance to hook one up with a Bastl ARP and Bastl Kastle 1.5 at Machina Bristronica to great effect.

Simple, yet complex sound machine

Kastle Drum may be small but it holds a whole universe of sounds. It's simple enough that you can quickly get some nice rhythmic patterns out of it, but once you start digging deeper into its connections, mess around with I/O via other devices, or use an external CV sequencer (e.g. Korg SQ-1)... Just wow. Highly recommended.

Fun little synth
shalloG 11.10.2024
My friend had a Bastl Kastle synth that seemd really fun to mess around with. So I looked for a similar experience and settled for the Kastle Drum. The modular UI is very small and finicky so if you can't see well or you're not delicate enough it can get very hard to be precise. It is possible to recreate sounds but it can be pain. The synth is great for experimenting and great pairing with other gear/DAW. It can be battery operated, it's small, light and great for traveling.
If you know what to expect you're in for a reward!
