Excellent mouthpiece with a narrow throat
JazzBass 22.12.2020
The Bach 1B is arguably the reference for all orchestral mouthpieces and I have been using it for years. Its big and aggressive sound are amazing. The only negative point is its throat, that is too narrow for an orchestral mouthpiece of this kind (# 27). Such a narrow throat works well with small-bore Bb and C trumpets, it is a bit small for ML bores, and it is definitely too narrow for large-bore Bb and C trumpets usually employed in professional orchestras. The solution is to search for equivalent mouthpieces with larger throats. Enlarging the throat of an existing mouthpiece is not recommendable, therefore, if you feel that the throat of the Bach 1B is too narrow, the best solution is to choose a Bach Megatone 1B, or an equivalent mouthpiece like the Schilke 20: both have larger throats (# 26). The difference in size seems minimal, but the effect on sound and tuning is immense. Many think that the extra mass in the Bach Megatone is what it makes it superior. In fact the extra mass has more of a psychological effect than an acoustic one; what really makes it superior is the #26 throat. Anyway, if you feel satisfied with the standard Bach 1B with the #27 throat, keep it, because it is an excellent mouthpiece. But I recommend that you prove some day the Megatone version or the Schilke 20. Then you may discover which throat suits better to your playing style.

NB
Big mouthpiece

Great mouthpiece but very big. Great for big sound but hard work in the upper register. I use it if I want a nice rounded and projected sound with not too high demands.

Mundstück mit guten Eigenschaften
Friedemann S. 12.03.2010
