as new, this mallet is a little rough to the touch, and the leather finishing is a bit unclean, but it works as a bowl mallet, works well for bowing, and at this cost it's a good purchase. After some use, once the surface is smoother, I expect the bare side will sound nicer. The leather side I've had to roughen a bit already.
