A nice improvement over the old model
Anonymous 18.11.2016
The presentation picture is an older version of eLicenser key. This new version is quite small - it's pretty much, I would say, 33% the metallic part that gets into the USB slot and 66% the plastic key itself.

This is my first key, it's been a year and no problems with it whatsoever. I read lots of complains about old keys being broken, but I think this current design is really hard to break by accident.

Some people may complain about these keys taking up ports on their laptops so I found a working solution: I only have two ports on my laptop and they are not enough anyway. So I purchased a 4-port slim USB-powered USB hub and with a self-adhesive velcro tape I fixed it on my macbook's back of the screen (lid). The soft side is on the laptop so whenever I pack it it will not hold onto any stuff that gets in contact with, and the "sticky velcro side" goes to the usb hub which goes into an accessories bag when on the move. This way I have 4 ports available for eLicenser key, other keys and a portable hard drive. The second free port on the laptop is for quickly getting memory sticks in/out.

Useful purchase

Cubase with an old (2007) elicenser started and shut down for a long time. After restarting the computer, the licensing software did not recognize the device from time to time. The new one works quickly and flawlessly.

forget-me-not

Great device for transferring your licenced soft from one computer to another. But if you misplace it, your licence is gone. Since Steinberg is moving on with new protection options, this is not going to be a problem any more.

Does exactly what you would expect

Very well made. No moving parts. Usb tip is not sticking out stronge (like ilok v3) so potentialldamage is not expected.

Very small footprint but feels dense in hand giving it a solid feel.

From time to time you need to synchronize it with Steinberg servers in order for everything to work fluently.

Overall this copy protection is working fine for Cubase. You plug it in and forget about it.

wast of time

I bought this item as a spare, in case my USB eLicenser for my Cubase program was lost .
But in actual fact you can only have one eLicenser active at one time ,even though it gives the impression you on the Cubase web page you can backup to it .But you can't !! .
Maybe if you lose the original you can backup to the new one ,but it warns you if you lose the original you will have to pay for a new program !!.
If this is the case ,why are they selling this product ? .I can't see the use at all.
I have several different versions all residing on this USB eLicenser .
so as far as I'm concerned this is a waste off time !!!!

Great that it's getting smaller
soundsound 07.07.2020
I've always had problems with the older (longer) eLicensers that they tend to break/loosen between the metal plug and the plastic. Hopefully this gets less of a problem now that it's smaller.

Why do we still need those?
Dave_PL 22.02.2020
As it's XXI century I wish there was some better solution than hard token, but it does its job well and looks like it can survive a lot. This version is smaller than the one I bought few years ago, which makes it feel sturdy.
