Best small diaphragm mic the money can buy
Michael Goorevich 01.03.2019
I already have quite a wide arsenal of MKH mics including mkh8040 stereo pair.
However this MKH8090 is a a little magic: it's still a cardioid mic but because of its omni characteristics its less sensitive to the wind and handling noise. I use it in the OTRF Rycote basket and comparing to my MKH8040 it has same natural and silky sound but even with smoother central image (speaking film sound). I would recommend it for anyone aiming to record quite and not only background, sfx and foleys instead of MKH 8040. It has the same noise floor and frequency response.

Incredible.

Absolutely wonderful for ambience recording as a stereo pair. The wide cardioid design means that they still have enough focus so as to feel a bit directional and not "washed out" so to speak, but with an open characteristic.

I'd rather use my 416 or some proper cardioid condensers for foley/SFX work, however when you need to capture the environment you are in, these are the ones.

I'd imagine they would act as fantastic room mics for orchestral recording as well.

I just wish that it was a replaceable capsule system as with some of the competition out there. But you can't have it all. And what you do have here is one top shelf microphone as it is.

They are also tiny, but as the old saying goes - good things come in small packages. If you are a sound designer or location audio guy, these should definitely be on your list imho.

Superb

I've just bought two of these to use as a main stereo pair for recording chamber music / ambient atmospheres / voices in good studios.
I already own a pair of 8020s and an 8050, and have been so delighted with them that I'm also going to start saving for a pair of 8040s and a 8060 for boom work.
They are lovely microphones - incredibly clear, detailed, noiseless, accurate, versatile and - particularly if you're also working to picture - almost invisible.
Not cheap, but you know what they say!
Highly recommended by me.
