The NTG-3 has superb handling for voice dialog recording and sampling on location, though its professional high end sound makes it equally flexible for studio applications. The featured RF bias technology that rode says makes it almost completely resistant to moisture is outstanding. I spent 3 days on location in several areas with constant varying weather and moisture conditions, indoor and outdoor (using the additional appropriate equipment) the NTG-3 stayed 100% consistent - wow!
Outstanding shotgun microphone that does everything you would expect a high end shotgun mic to do. Polar pattern is perfect with great side and back rejection. Gain response and volume versus distance is clean and smooth. Handles subtle and sharp physical movements extremely well using correct equipment. Sound is almost a little warm but remains delightfully transparent without sounding dry.
For the price, quality and 10 year warranty Rode include, the value for money is great and the NTG-3 way out ways the price v quality difference for mics in a similar or lower price range. In my opinion you would be better to save up the additional 300 euro for the NTG-3 various the NTG-2 at 200 euro in terms of bang for buck so to speak, regardless if you are thinking of going for mid/semi pro range.
Extremely well engineered - it is a sensitive piece of equipment but Rode have painstakingly designed the NTG-3 to withstand active and prolonged periods of use (with the usual care) and the sleek weather resistance metal cylinder case included is a great addition to the package.
This mic quickly made its way into my top 5 favorite mics of all time and has wowed both fellow engineers and none sound people. Using a good mic preamp and descent headphones during production and on review while still on location, I had a clear picture of exactly what to expect from the audio later in post for the mix. For me the NTG-3 stands out on its own for its unparalleled sound and over all quality.
