The new SE on the block

electric guitar PRS SE Silver Sky Moon White front

The PRS Silver Sky may have been the most polarising guitar of recent years, but its popularity cannot be denied. Since its introduction, the company has been barely able to keep up with the demand. This is in no small part thanks to its artist association with John Mayer, one of today’s most influential guitar players, but also because the instrument represents the best of traditional features, but with the benefit of modern methods and materials, to meet the demands of the modern player. And though from afar the design may look very familiar, PRS and John Mayer have included some refinements that improve upon this classic design. With the PRS SE Silver Sky, the guitar is now available as a more affordable alternative to the US-made version.

Traditional meets modern

The PRS SE Silver Sky clearly wears its heritage proudly. The classic double cut design has been updated to include the signature PRS carve on the lower horn, making access to the upper register even easier. The body is fashioned out of poplar, while the bolt-on maple neck sports a rosewood fingerboard with the classic PRS bird inlays. The fingerboard radius is a comfortable and more modern 8.5”, while the scale length remains 25.5” (648mm). Three 635JM “S” single coils power the guitar and provide that classic single coil sound, while being balanced and even. The pickups are wired through a single volume and two tone controls, and a five-way pickup selector switch, so dialling in your tones the way you want is never a problem. Even the ouput jack has been redesigned.

Not just for Blues

John Mayer may be one of the most celebrated Blues guitarists of modern times, but the PRS SE Silver Sky is by no means limited to this one genre. The guitar can just as easily belt out Hard Rock or Pop, Reggae or Punk, Country or Alternative, Metal or, if you are that way inclined, Jazz, and even Hip-Hop! This guitar will wail like a baby or roar like a lion, it’s all up to the player. It’s not for nothing that players have been asking for this PRS instrument ever since the original Silver Sky came out back in 2018. This relative newcomer to the PRS family has already become a staple on stages across the world. The SE Silver Sky may be a modern instrument, but it is also a classic in the making.

About PRS

Paul Reed Smith Guitars is an American manufacturer of top-of-the-range electric guitars. Based in Stevensville, Maryland, the company was founded in 1985 by Paul Reed Smith, who had already been making guitars on his own since the mid-1970s as part of his music degree. PRS Guitars owes its breakthrough to guitar legend Carlos Santana, who liked the guitars so much that he soon ordered custom-made instruments from the firm. Since then, the product range has grown to include basses, acoustic guitars, and amplifiers. The list of PRS artists is abundant with big names: John Mayer, Mark Tremonti, Alex Lifeson, and Mark Holcomb are just a handful of the signature artists who testify to the quality of PRS instruments.

The sky is the limit

John Mayer and PRS worked together to make sure the pickups and electronics give players all the best of the vintage sound guitarists know and love, but with all the advantages of modern production techniques. So you won’t find them excessively harsh or boomy, but smooth and round. The volume and tone controls let you further sculpt your sound the way you see fit. The bridge pickup has its own dedicated tone knob, for those passages where a warmer bridge pickup sound is required. There is also the two-point vibrato system, another improvement on a vintage design which, along with the synthetic bone nut, ensures better tuning stability even if you like to use heavy-handed vibrato techniques. Of course, the placement of the volume knob allows volume swells to be easy and effortless.

Amazing quality for the price
Ashok 11.04.2022
I have played the US Core Silver Sky which is close to 3x the price of the Silver Sky SE, and have to say the difference is minimal.

The Silver Sky SE neck has the same ultra comfortable profile, the pickups sound almost identical (the SE pickups feel a tiny bit brighter than the US core model), the smooth pickup switching and responsive tone knobs are the same too.

If you zoom in to the tiny details, there are definitely a few visible signs of lower cost assembly, but none of these impact the playability or tone of the guitar which as mentioned above, is practically identical to the US core model.

Some issues include
- A few pickguard screws that aren't perfectly perpendicular to the guitar body, leading to some edges of the pick guard not being perfectly flush with the guitar body
- One of the pickup mounting screws left a small scratch on one of the pickup covers
- A small scratch in the satin finish on the headstock wood

You really have to zoom in close to pay attention to these types of issues, and none of them impact the experience of playing the guitar whatsoever. None of them are worth paying an extra €2k for the US core model in my opinion.

Overall, I cannot recommend this model highly enough to anyone looking for a clost to perfect rendition of a 60s style Stratocaster. In this price range I don't think there are any better options, including Fender!

In love

I've had the opportunity to play high-end guitars from a friend's private collection, including the original Silver Sky Nebula (fantastic colour btw). I loved everything about that guitar and decided I wanted it. I looked online and saw people say the SE was practically just as good as the real deal. After trying it for myself, I completely agree with them! This guitar holds up playing anything from blues to heavier punk riffs I've written. It's my second PRS guitar from this price range and I am sure I'll never purchase guitars from another brand.
