Moog EP-3 50K linear expression pedal
Steve Merlin 01.03.2021
After a lot of research on pot values and other features, I keep coming back to this expression pedal. I use it for my Moog Minitaur (duh), Novation Peak, EQD Transmisser and Strymon guitar pedals. The value adjustment knob and polarity switch are useful and make it a versatile pedal. The pot value is 50K (linear). By the way, for Yamaha keys and the Neo Ventilator, go for a Yamaha FC-7 because the EP-3 doesn't work for those.
Most of the checking-out I did, started with this list here:
Moog EP-3 feels very solid and the pedal stays in the angle you left it in. The included TRS-cable and -plugs work OK.

Looking for even more affordable expression pedal than the Roland EV-5 I came to the Moog.

As it's cheaper, it also looks like it, having no thrills plain uniform black plastic for the entire pedal, not even rubber on the pedal. Saying that, it does have a steel plate at the bottom that adds nice weight to it and rubber feet to keep it from sliding around.

Its height resembles more a wah pedal, so it's not as compact as the Roland, but in some situations one might prefer this as it will be on the same level with some other pedals.
Pedal travel is nice and smooth and I like also that you can remove the cable, which is not the case with the Roland.

Good choice if you don't want to pay lots for a pot in a box.

Basic but solid
Sawtooth Enjoyer 30.08.2022
I use this as an extra modulation input for my DeepMind 12, and it has made it much more, err... expressive! It's a pretty basic expression pedal - just a potentiometer, a polarity switch and an adjustment control on the side, but it's solidly built and does what it does very well. The metal baseplate makes it heavy enough that it stays planted on the floor, big enough that you can easily rest your foot on it and there's a good amount of friction - just enough to keep it where you want it. The part that connects the pedal to the potentiometer is metal - one of the reasons I went with this pedal, since on many of the cheaper ones it looks like snappable plastic. There's lots of attention to detail here: the surface of the pedal is slightly rubbery for extra grip.
The adjustment on the side is probably useful for controlling guitar pedals and suchlike, but it's not useful on a synth where you have direct control over the modulation amount anyway. I forgot it was there until I came to write this review.
The best part about this pedal is that you can boast about having a Moog even if you can only afford Behringer synths.

Not fit for my use, but an excellent pedal!
ivoi.iovi 08.01.2021
I had one of these years ago and used it with a Moog Little Phatty S2, the pedal was solid and this recent purchase matched that quality.
I can't fault the pedal itself, but I am returning this one as I find that for use as an expression controller for guitar pedals (my intended use this time) it is a little uncomfortable due to the height from the ground. When sitting with the synth I didn't notice, but when standing to play guitar it just feels a little off to me.
I guess I just prefer flatter expression pedals which allow my foot to stay closer to the ground, it's a totally subjective thing and I think many people would actually prefer this extra height and certainly the more solid feel.

Efficient but lacking personality

This pedal combines as a volume or tone depending on what stomp box you assign it to. I have a Moog Drive and a Moog Trem. When plugged in to one or the other, it can be used as Trem speed, Volume or Wha. It's up to you to fiddle around and find what you want out of it. No explanation needed there! There is a small knob on the side that remains a little bit of a mystery. Sometimes it widens the amplitude sometimes it does nothing. Again, its a thing you learn to fiddle with and happily or accidentally find what you are looking for. Doesn't require any power. I find it most interesting with the Tremolo when you want to go a little wacky. It's roughly the same size as an Ernie Ball VPJr so it will sit conformably on your board.

Works great with Quad Cortex.
TByrne 16.11.2021
I bought this to use with the Quad Cortex and it works out the box.

It's very solid and very plastic. Purely functional with little aesthetic value, it won't win a design award but feels like it would survive a stampede let alone years of use.

It can only be used for a single expression without the ability to toggle between two like some pedals so if that's what you are after it probably isn't much good to you. But if you're using it for one thing, like a wah say, it does the job perfectly.

I would not buy once again.
dr Pokerian 23.03.2021
Build quality is not bad for the price. Unfortunately, logarithmic characteristics of the potentiometer makes it hardly usable for use as an expression (CC11) controller. Only works well as a CV controller for Moog synth, for example for controlling the filter cutoff. I had to buy another pedal with linear characteristics to control the loudness the way I wanted to.

So I've bought this pedal because I've recently got my hands on a EQD Avalanche Run and I want to control some paramters with a good expression pedal. The manual of the EQD AR said the Moog EP-3 is best suited for the job.
I've been using it for a week now and I'm very happy with the pedal, the build quality is fine and pedal moves smooth and feels very natural.

This pedal is pretty self explanatory, a fun thing is the jack cable that comes with the Moog EP-3 is not hardwired on the pedal it self.
This gives me room to manuver the pedal on my board or other locations.

I've got no complaints one week after buying it and working with it.

L
Budget expression pedal that just about does the job
LouisC 27.12.2014
After some fairly long and tedious searches for a good multi purpose expression pedal that would not break the bank I decided on the Moog EP-2. First impressions were good, it is quite a sturdy and robust design in heavy plastic. I've owned the unit for 3 years now without any breakages or need to do the fiddly work of replacing the string within the mechanism.
Despite its sturdy design and durability I would say the main issue for me is quality. The heel down to toe down sweep did not remain smooth for very long, and sitting on a pedalboard next to a high quality pedal like an Ernie Ball volume pedal, it feels rather creaky and stiff. The nut that holds the foot plate in place also regularly needs tightening as otherwise it has a tendency to creep up on its own when putting it in the heeld down position.

My verdict: a good budget expression pedal, but don't expect too much!

This might seem like a modest and not very exciting expression pedal, but these things aren't all the same and sometimes a specific pedal doesn't behave well with some gear. Since I bought it in 2016, the EP-3 has proven itself to be the expression pedal that works when others act up. Currently I'm using it with Doepfer A-177-2 to modulate eurorack.
