Lovely Guitar but Does Require Setting Up
DavePep 16.02.2025
Firstly, the idea of a 34" semi acoustic with neck and middle pickups ticked all my boxes and both pickups have an impressive amount of output, so much so, that the volume knobs have to dialled back to 3 when using the standard settings on my amp. It is also a pleasure to play, despite the expected neck dive, which is counteracted by the fact that you will be pressing down on the body while playing and I also prefer a higher strap position anyway.
The problem that I did encounter was that the guitar did not seem to have been set up at all, especially with the bridge seeming like it was installed just as it had been delivered from its factory with all the saddles in the middle of the bridge, and the action was way higher than the Hofner web site indicated. So, the neck relief, action and intonation all had to be adjusted for the Hofner supplied strings.
The intonation was initially difficult to get right for the A and E strings, with those saddles running out of travel, but that was cured by reversing the A and E saddles, something that really should have done at the factory.
Weirdly, Hofner don't mention the string sizes in their otherwise informative web page for the guitar. but they are 40, 60, 75 and 95, or thereabouts. I also found that an extra long scale string set with 37.5" to 38" between ball and taper is what is needed. In my case, D'Addario ECB80SL flatwounds were the perfect replacements .
All in all, it is a lovely guitar that is a joy to play with a wide range of sounds, but it does require a bit of work to get it set up properly.

T
Retro bass with the full scale
Tim73 04.01.2017
I'd previously owned the verythin short scale bass because it came with the classic intonation issues that these basses do (never bothered me but I did a session with a producer who moaned all the enjoyment out of owning it!). I was online one night when I saw Hofner did this long scale version and my wife actually said straight away "just buy it!" So I did and have never looked back. Amazing tone and finish. It does what you'd expect of a semi acoustic bass. A lot of fun and great value for the money.
