I pre-ordered this back in April/May and was among the first to receive one.
A nice well designed preamp for it's intended use of direct to FOH or to a power amp. It's a sturdy built unit, the same size as the Eden WTDI. Powered by 9v battery, power supply or phantom power means power fail will not be an issue. The very early models like mine had a problem with phantom power which has now been resolved,I chose to keep the original unit as there was no shortage of spare power cables on my pedal board.
Feature-wise, the Bass Expander packs plenty into it's small box.The inclusion of a 'Blend' knob was most welcome, some preamp EQs can colour your tone, the 'blend' allows you feed your original tone in or out the preamp signal. Sweepable mids and compression are also welcome. There's a nice smooth feel when rotating the knobs
The most common question I was asked when I bought the BE DI was about the 'gain'. Did it sound like an Ampeg when up full ? The answer is No, nor do I think it was designed to. If you want to sound like you're playing through an Ampeg buy the Ampeg DI :-)
The BE DI can fill many roles. It's output isn't too deadly if you planned on stacking preamps and it'll work with an active cab. FOH has been mentioned so that only leaves it's role as a practise tool. With 'aux in' for MP3s and 'headphone' plus the preamp section it's more than enough.
Personally I think all bass players should carry a preamp/DI box for a number of reasons, insurance against amp failure being the main one. I think the BE DI will see strong competition from Ampeg,Eden and Hartke but rightly so as it means to compete with them. This is no wannabe, it's definitely a contender.

A
Really good for the price
Anonymous 14.11.2022
Was looking for a simple DI box without too much settings and that one really ticks all the box. Sounds really good. Compressor is alright but not great. Blend setting is a good addition. Really good deal overall, my only suggestions would be:

- Have a slightly bigger version with a tuner
- When the preamp is engaged the light turns red and green when it's not. it does feel a bit counter intuitive.
- The knobs do feel a bit cheap and the bass, middle and treble don't "click" when set to 0db

Would recommend!

Superb for the bassist on a budget
Squidy 09.08.2017
After owning an 'Ampeg SCR-DI Bass Pre-Amp', but never being totally happy with its sound, I decided to take a chance on this.
I was glad I found this as a replacement; used mainly for quiet headphone practice this is a fantastic compact little unit that allows me to play along with my favourite tunes using the line-in function.
I'm no expert but the tone sounds great to me and the compression is a nice added bonus to even out the volume.
I can recommend this pedal to the bassist on a budget. For its price it's a steal!

Tested on 5 string bass

Using ti with a 5 string jazz bass. Pros: Price, features, headphone output, equalization does do a lot, solid contruction. Cons: Noisy compressor, LED colors are confusing (negative logic, takes time to get used to it when the pedal is in the pedal board with other pedals).

works fine with good features. the compressor is not terribly good, but good for subtle use. I found the preamp a bit weak: I wasn't able to get the signal high enough for good recording.
