At first I was very excited. I needed to turn my 18" floor tom into a Bass drum. So I look at the Pearl holder but it's only in 16", so the Gibraltar kit was the only choice really.
I looked a demos on Youtube and yes it was very interesting and promising. Couldn't wait to put my hands on one, and given the stiff price of ¤174 I thought, that might be a good investment.
This is well built and solid and heavy so it's reassuring.
The spikes are REALLy pointy so use a carpet otherwise you'll scratch the floor, any floor ! Soft carpet or a mat only. I regret there wasn't an option with rubber feet.
I find it very difficult to level the feet with the pedal holder. It is nearly impossible to have it straight. Whatever way you put it the bass drum pedal is lifting from the back. So this is poor and it really feels it's going to snap, either the little "L" shaped clamp or the pedal itself ! Not good.
The real downside of this kit is the tom holder. Although it is cleverly made as one would think at first, it is very weak also. 1 practice, on a very rock song (Free Bird from Lynrd Skynrd) and the tom holder just got loose, resulting in a drop of the tom on the snare drum... in the middle of the song! Thank goodness it was during practice and not live at a gig as it was not ideal. The nut just went loose. Incredible! I am tempted returning this kit but it's over 30 days now... It's a big let down and I feel like I've been ripped off.
To summarise, the spikes (feet) and pedal attachement is ok, but it feels like it could snap any moment, and the tom holder is very weak and not solid enough for rock. I believe if you play jazz it'll do but don't expect playing anything too heavy for too long or you'll have your kit on your lap !

Happy New Set!
