18i20 is useless or am I using it wrong?

All I want is a sound interface that if I put a signal on Ch 1 it is routed to Channel 1
Ch 2 is routed two Ch2.
Ch3 routed to Ch 3 etc.
Is that too much to ask?
Also Adobe Audition does not recognise the 18i20.
All drivers are up to date.
