Amazing, deep, mellow sound. Still very clear and well defined. Excellent quality, made in the USA. Great for the price, recommended.

Excellent value for money.

I love these flats. Perfect upgrade to my Vintage Modified Jazz Bass (fretted). I now have a great vintage tone, without the excess finger noise that roundwounds give.

This is my first upgrade to flat strings. After reading various reviews on the web, I was expecting my tone to be dark and dull sounding. Not so. The strings give your bass a little more low end thump, and perhaps slightly less treble, but overall they are a great balanced sound. Plus they are super-comfortable to play. With a twist of the tone control I can now get pretty close to the old James Jamerson Motown sound, which is exactly what I was after. They don't just do vintage though, they are versatile enough to work in a varied covers band.

Maybe serious players will notice the difference between these and a set of Thomastik or similar. I played my session musician friend's bass, fitted with far more expensive flat strings and I couldn't tell. So for weekend giggers like me, save yourself a few pennies, but these and treat yourself to a couple more pints instead :)

Affordable and recommended

Switching to these from 45-105 roundwounds on my PJ has really made a difference. Tuned them to DGCF, and it feels totally right, not loose at all.

Despite the "jazz and reggae" reputation of flatwounds, the loss of highs is not as dramatic as I feared it could be. And you can use the tone control if you don't need them, of course.

Besides, I find the J bridge pickup (Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound) has begun sounding usable for the first time ever, and in more than one configuration with the P pickup. Strings having more metal content may be contributing to the shielding.

I love these Strings! Really great set of flats that work perfectly on a USA and Japanese Precision I own. Firstly, the tension is very similar to stock strings, so if these are replacing standard 45-105s you may not even have to tweak your setup, I didn't. The strings have a great smooth feel and are comfortable even after 3 hour pub gigs. They are ideal for recording as there is far less finger noise and the tone seems to be more balanced. They don't sound dull or dead, the highs are still present, you just lose that clang and shrillness that you get with rounds. They also get better with age and feel better after a few gigs. Lastly, the price is great. It's a lot of string for the money and a great way of introducing yourself to flats.

Great for fretless and fretted.

I'm quite impressed with these, but I don't feel they are amazing. At the moment they are a bit scratchy for string bends, but I hope they will improve over use. The sound however is where they score highly. Depending on your finger style they have the brightness of roundwounds, and the as expected warm and mellow tones. They also work well on fretted bass, finally I can get that John Deacon sound! ( I edited this review from 4 to 5 stars, they have settled in nicely after playing for a couple of years! I’m not being cheap, they just don’t need changing.)

Got these flats as an alternative to my usual Pyramid Golds. Wgilst the Golds sound great on my P bass i needed something a bit brighter for my Epiphone Jack Casady bass.

Ive heard the tension on Fender Flats can be high but these seem fine to me. Lovely lively bright sound initially that mellows to a more traditional thump over time. They still maintain the ability to growl when i dig in with a pick though so definiteley a great all-rounded.

The lime green silks look great (at both the bridge and the headstock) and the intonation was very easy to set.

I love these, If it wasn't for the fact that I just switched to 5 string I would probably use these strings for the rest of my life.

Quality strings, but I just don't like them
Anonymous 25.02.2023
I'm a flatwound string fan and used many different ones (Chromes, TIs, LaBellas, Roto jazz flats, Pyramids...).

I just didn't like the sound of these. Nothing objectively wrong with it though. It's balanced between strings, nice fundamentals etc... It was the upper end, the steel zing that I just found annoying. Maybe it would have broken in over time, but it was too annoying to give them time.

The quality seems great though. Tension is even, finish impeccable. Price is good too... Try them out, maybe they work for you.

Amazing vintage sound
Anonymous 19.02.2017
I have used this on a jazz bass with alder body and rosewood fretboard and sounds amazing. Really warm sound with nice feeling on hands. Depending on the bass/amp settings you can achieve a really nice vintage sound. These flatwounds can last for years without any issue.

Mellow!

Great value for money. Nice medium tension and smooth under the fingers as expected with a decent set of flats. Classic mellow tones. The silk ends are a light green colour.
