Best allround Bass Strings
Sgt. Floyd 22.03.2014
Hi have tried about 25 different Bass strings because I noticed, that some strings have a very aggressive and harsh overtone character, that stays even after a few days of playing. Other strings sound very nice and round and smooth when they are new on the bass, but after some playing they loose all their freshness and sound only dull. Some other sound great but do not feel very comfortable as they feel rough and sharp and make a hughe noise when you are sliding over the fretboard.

After trying the DR highbeams (nice, but in my opinion they have too much of the overtones) and the rounder sounding DR lowriders, I tried the nickel covered version of both. The Sunbeams are the nickel version of the highbeams and the tite fite are the nickel low riders. The difference is in the profile of the core string. The sunbeams (and also the high beams) have a round core string while the tite fite / low riders have a hex core string. The round core feels a bit looser and the sound is not as deep as the hex core strings. But the round core sound is more ballanced and a little bit more brilliant.

The nickel covered strings feel great: the are very smooth and soft and very easy to play. If you like a stiffer feel, I woul suggest the tite fite. Both sound very round and well balanced with a round buttom end bass and nice warm mids. The hights are not so strong and in the foreground. In all these strings sound very balanced but the characteristic is warm and smooth, so I like them when playing soul, blues, pop and rock. If you are looking for more attack then better try the highbeams and low rider.

All DR Strings last very long. After changeing they need some playtime to get their charakteristic sound, so don't be fooled by the first sound you hear. After about 4 hours of playing you got the sound that you will get for month of playing. I am playing about 1 to 4 hours a day and use the same set of strings for 2 to 3 month. Even when they are old, they sound nearly the same but I feel it, when playing that so nice sound does not come that easy anymore. that's the time when I change the set.

I normaly use the 105 - 045 for fingerstyle playing as they sound a little bit fuller and deeper as the 100 - 40. These are my weapon for slapping, as the are faster and have this special brightness that I like for funky slapping.

For me, these are the best strings you can get and I am done with the search for the right strings,

Try these on your Jazz-Bass...
Florian B. 13.02.2014
I have tried a lot of strings over the past years and while I found the perfect string for everyday use on my fretless, the DR Sunbeams are, in my opinion, the best sounding strings for a fretted Jazz-Bass. These strings have just the right amount of low-end without being muddy, a very organic, growly midrange and the perfect high-end and brilliance for slapping and fingerstyle that just fits the Jazz-Basses natural tone perfectly. They are soft on your fingers as well, very easy to play. I played quite frequently and these strings normally last between 1 and 2 months.

F
Quality bass strings!
Fionn 15.05.2015
I am a big fan of DR strings including their hi-beam collection and found that these fell no shorter of the excellence DR provides! Very high quality product. The resonance is excellent and the brightness after restringing my five string is uncompared to what I had on my bass previous! The low B string is remarkable! This is my first time buying the five string set and I am very happy that I did. I havent experienced the sound of a low B like I have with these DR's. Very Very pleased that i bought this product!

P
My go-to strings for electric basses
PMartin 15.02.2014
I pair these strings with my Lakland JO5 which is basically a 35" scale jazz bass. They are flexible and have a great and soft feel. The Sunbeams lack the extreme high and low end emphasis other strings may possess and their strength lies definitely in the beautiful midrange content which compliments the sound of my bass guitar well.
I have been playing these strings for several years now and still enjoy them.
