As with all Doepfer products, the a136 is powerful, inexpensive and logically laid out. It requires careful gainstaging to coax the best performance from it so be warned you'll be spending some time initially finding the sweet spots - but they are there, rest assured. I often use the a136 on my stand alone synths also, as well as my eurorack only sound design, with great results. Just remember your gainstaging and you'll love it.

It need some practice
Wildthing 29.06.2020
It's a really good hard clipper and it works well as a waveshaper. However it takes a bit of time to understand how to get the most out of it. I'm still learning....

Less Distortion, More Added Beef
LiamJ 10.10.2015
I found this to add less distortion and more of a general fuzz/amp module giving the sound a bit louder/thicker sound than the perceived distortion that you would achieve, but as always, great build quality and a lovely module to add to the collection, great for beefing up bass lines created on a modular.

HAHA Kick goes bzzzt
Mexl 12.02.2025
Put any Kick through it, turn the BPM to 211 and go absolutely Nuts, like its the Netherlands 25 years ago...
I love it.
You can also use it in a more sensible way, to create a plethora of weird and wacky waveforms from any ol' vanilla VCO.
Or just obliterate anything to a square.
I saw some other reviews stating you'd have to study electronics on MIT to understand how this thing works, but i have to disagree: you probably need some time and research to wrap your head around the concept but its not rocket science (or FM-synthesis)
11 out of 10 me recommend the Doepfer A-136

A-136
Wasp Burgh 08.04.2018
Iv had this for while now, and it always amaze me how nice it can sound on drums or base lines. I find my self using it on LFOs as well with great effect. Plus the price of the unit is good for what it offers. If your looking for wave shaper then you can't go wrong with A-136
