Recording made easy

The EVO 4 is a compact 2-in/2-out USB 2.0 audio interface (USB-C) for Windows, macOS, and iOS that is aimed at creative users of all kinds and combines a stylish and minimalistic design with an innovative operating philosophy. By reducing the overall number of controls and employing a large multi-functional encoder, it offers a simple and intuitive workflow, while other features such as automatic level adjustment via Smartgain will doubtless be appreciated by beginners and more advanced users alike. The internal converters operate at resolutions of up to 24 bit/96kHz and feature a wide dynamic range of 113dB(A). The combination of two powerful and extremely low-noise microphone preamplifiers (with a gain range of 58dB) offers the requisite performance for outstanding recordings, so users looking for a compact interface with audiophile qualities will find just that in the EVO 4.

Two in, two out

The two input channels of the EVO 4 are designed as XLR/jack combo sockets and are suitable for connecting microphones as well as line-level sources such as keyboards or synthesizers. Channel one also features an additional jack socket that can be used as a high-impedance instrument input for guitars and basses, and each channel features a switchable 48V phantom power option to allow studio microphones to be used. For stereo recordings, it is very helpful that the input level of both channels can also be controlled in combination. On the output side, the EVO 4 features a balanced main output for active studio monitors as well as a powerful headphone output, with the added bonus that the former is automatically muted when headphones are connected.

A portable interface for all media creators

The EVO 4 is aimed at all users who want to create audio content and work on the move. This compact audio interface is just as well-suited to musicians, songwriters, and producers as it is to YouTubers, podcasters, and streamers - the loopback feature being particularly interesting for the latter group, since it enables the user to record the complete output signal of the EVO 4, including the connected microphones. This makes audio routing for screencasting or recording video calls much less complicated. Because the audio interface is supplied with power via USB, there is also no need to rely on mains power even when using studio microphones that require 48V phantom power.

About EVO

A spin-off from the well-established British manufacturer Audient, EVO draws on over 20 years of experience in the field of pro audio technology. EVO was launched at the NAMM 2020 and offers high-quality products with innovative features and minimalist design. With the motto "make recording easy" and a focus on ease of use and contemporary workflow techniques, EVO caters for demanding media professionals from a wide range of sectors. The first products in the manufacturer's portfolio are the two mobile USB audio interfaces EVO 4 and EVO 8.

Plug in and record

Weighing in at just 360 grams, the compact and USB-powered EVO 4 is an ideal audio interface for mobile use, and the class-compliant unit can be connected to an iPad via its USB-C port and used directly. It should be noted, however, that models with a Lightning port will require a suitable adapter as well as an active USB hub. For operation on a Mac or PC, an adapter cable for USB-A is included in the scope of delivery. The bandwidth of the USB 2.0 protocol is perfectly sufficient for working with the two input and output channels at low latency, and when using a compatible DAW software, the preamp gain can even be controlled comfortably from the computer after installing the corresponding drivers.

In the spotlight: Encoder functionality

The central control element of the EVO 4 is a large encoder that is surrounded by a ring of 19 LEDs and by default controls the output volume of the main output and the headphone output. The surrounding buttons can be used to switch the function of the control so that it either controls the input level of the channels (individually or in combination) or as a mix control to adjust the balance of inputs and DAW plaback for latency-free monitoring. When making stereo recordings, a helpful feature is that the panorama settings of the input channels can also be controlled in this way. Compared to conventional audio interface designs with dedicated controls for each individual function or a software mixer, the EVO 4 provides a clearer and more modern workflow.

satisfied despite the flaws
nikvel 13.04.2021
I use Evo with a laptop.
Accordingly, the sound card itself and all related audio equipment are stationary, and the laptop follows me around the apartment and beyond.
In such conditions, I got the following experience in 4 months of use:

a) pluses
- on win 10, the card was installed as a native one and worked as accurately as a clock, right up to the notorious system updates;
- dimensions: small, very convenient, does not interfere on the table;
- preamplification: for a fairly quiet tube microphone (Nady 1100, not bad, but entry-level, and very old) it gives out smoothly. The impression that there is no color at all. At least on my cheap equipment (mostly in the non-professional segment), when the gain is changed, no metamorphosis in the signal is observed;
- Evo software mixer is simple and straightforward from the very beginning.

b) cons:
- case: since I use the device stationary, this does not concern me much, but if you often work in the field, you will want a more reliable case. Now, when you change the connected devices, you take the entire card in your hand and squeeze it with quite a little effort. But this effort is enough for fears that you will damage the device. I repeat: the card itself does not suffer in any way, but there is fear, and it distracts attention;
- weight: very light piece. If this is a plus during transportation, then be careful when working - position the cables so as not to catch on them and not accidentally throw the Evo off the table;
- compatibility: after recent updates to the win 10 system, reconnecting the Evo became problematic - the settings for bit depth, sampling frequency, and latency began to get lost. This can happen even during recording, resulting in signal interruption (the sound growls loudly, as if it lacks a buffer).
_____ I treat this defect as follows: before recording, I change all the audio settings in Evo and daw, save them, then return the old settings, save again. It's annoying, but it works. I don’t know what is the matter more - in the OS, Evo, DAW or all together, but this only applies to recording. More precisely, analog-to-digital conversion. I am inclined to conclude that the fault for this lies with microsoft, but nevertheless it is desirable that the audient react faster, and they do not seem to read letters.

It's all! When the problem of driver compatibility is fixed (no matter who it is - MS or Audient), this interface will give you confidence and peace of mind. You can get used to the control, and if you are lazy, use a software solution. And yes, if you only use it at home and do not disconnect from your computer, then the described problem will not occur.
And once again I want to draw your attention to the ergonomics of the device. You don't expect the virtues it has from such a small box. Great device.

SG
Portable, great reproduction, great price
Steve Galloway 09.07.2020
Evo 4 is a reliable device that does a big job with little need for attention, so much so that it is easy to forget the device is there.

Audient recently enhanced user functions with the release of Windows and Mac desktop clients for managing Evo 4 via a keyboard/mouse. The value added software utility includes an additional desktop interface for managing loopback recording. With the release of this software utility the unit's overall accessibility, especially to non-tech users, is greatly improved.

I am producing some classical musicians in a large church right now with 5 mics which I am covering with Evo4 and a Zoom H5 as preamps. Evo 4 is portable, the unit is ready for use as soon as your computer is "up", and being able to run two mics on smartgain meant I could forget those mics and focus on issues that need constant attention when dealing with live performers.

A few reviews have mentioned that levels are not stored in Evo 4 memory between re-boots, and while I understand the seeming inconvenience, it takes little time to find a mic level with smartgain, and for work that needs intensive gain control these kinds of levels need constant attention whatever device you use.

Other reviews have also mentioned that monitors are deactivated while headphones are plugged in. As long as you know your choices when you buy, I do not see the problem at this price point.

Device efficiency saves time in live situations. For vloggers, gamers, and podcasters, Evo 4 is low maintenance. For professionals Evo 4 gives hands-free utility to permit increased scope of work. Audio quality is well above its price level, and yes, it CAN run a Shure SM7b, although I still slot a Cloudflifter into my soundchain. I would would trade up for the Evo8. I cannot think of a reason why even a pro would not be happy to have one in inventory.

If Audient offered a version upgrade which came in a hardened case I would pay the difference for the extra duability when I am on the road with it. Not everyone needs that though.

Great machine.

R
A great sounding affordable interface!
RodRed 27.08.2020
Evo 4 by Audient.
It is a great compact interface with an amazing sound quality given the price tag. Controls are a little bit different from other interfaces but once you get used to it is a breeze to work with. I would say the simplified 1 knob for all solution is really ingenious. And I like the smart gain function, it is very practical and saves time.
Audient software to control works very well in Windows and the driver is also flawless in my setup. It also comes with a bunch of 3rd party software that are very useful.
The build is good but the plastic seems very fragile, I have doubts about the durability of it, but since it looks like a product targeting home studio/podcast/vloggers I do not see much problem.
The second issue I have is the shape design. At first, I found it very elegant and distinctive from other products but the lightweight construction + the tall brick format makes it very unstable.
Pros
- easy of use
- great sound quality
- affordable
- smart gain
- usb-C connection
Cons
- plastic construction
- lightweight + tall brick design is unstable

T
The best combination of features for streaming music
Tushar 31.05.2023
Compared to other interfaces in this price range and slightly above, the Evo 4 has the best loopback mixer.
The "loopback" inputs and outputs can be accessed both by ASIO drivers and by windows drivers. This means that you can send audio to and from the windows environment and your DAW natively through the interface. The loopback mixer will let you mix between the virtual loopback inputs, the two hardware inputs AS WELL AS the hardware outputs and sum it into one virtual bus which are called the loopback outputs.
I think calling it "loopback" is misrepresenting and underselling this feature.

In my more than 1 year of use I have been satisfied with its performance. The build quality is fine but the unit is very light weight and susceptible to getting pulled off the table from a headphone or guitar cable plugged in the front. There is also no way provided to screw it to a top.

I use this to stream music from my DAW to my friends and it works very well for that. I can either mix in my microphone input and DAW audio to stream together as one audio stream. OR if the streaming software allows for it, select loopback audio and microphone input as separate audio sources, and stream only the DAW audio to the loopback. DAW Audio can be unprocessed in this way and I may put a gate and compressor on my mic.

The included software is okay too. I have tried it but I don't use it personally because I was already used to other products which fulfilled the same purpose.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this. And if you wanna stream music, this is definitely the best choice in its price range.
