Classic recording sound

The Universal Audio Volt 176 is a USB audio interface that features 1-in/2-out audio connections and premium high-precision 24-bit AD/DA converters with selectable sample rates up to 192kHz. This is complemented by a microphone preamp that offers a vintage mode for emulating the legendary UA 610 console during recording. The Volt 176 also comes with an on-board compressor, which allows volume peaks to be perfectly controlled before the signals are converted from analogue to digital, adding clarity and punch for a classic recording sound – inspired by UA’s renowned 1176.

All must-haves included

The Universal Audio Volt 176 offers all the essential features that users will expect of a modern, compact high-quality audio interface. Alongside its studio-quality converters, it is equipped with a switchable 48V phantom power supply as well as a headphone amplifier and jack for latency-free monitoring. The Volt 176 can be used on the most current laptops, iPads, and iPhones via its USB-C port, and its MIDI inputs and outputs allow MIDI controllers to be connected to the DAW studio software in order to transmit data and parameters for MIDI instruments. This audio interface comes with a software package comprising DAW software, an editing program for audio recordings, and a wide range of instruments and virtual effects, from a simple tuner through to emulations of famous guitar and bass amplifiers.

For streamers, podcasters, and musicians

Thanks to its microphone and instrument input, which is suitable for both jack plugs and XLR connectors, the Volt 176 is ideally suited to the requirements of singer-songwriters who want to record their instrument and vocals separately, and the selectable phantom power supply also allows it to be used in settings involving a condenser microphone. This Universal Audio interface makes it perfectly easy for livestreamers and podcasters to produce professional audio recordings in no time at all. The Volt 176 can be used on PCs with a Windows operating system from version 10 and macOS from version 10.14, or on iPads/iPhones with iOS 14 or newer. Users who require more than one input channel should also take a look at the Universal Audio Volt 276.

About Universal Audio

Few manufacturers can draw upon a wealth of audio engineering experience comparable to that of Universal Audio. The company’s founding father Bill Putnam, along with his friend Les Paul, have an admirable reputation as trend-setting music producers and developers of legendary analogue studio technology. Putnam recorded Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, and Sarah Vaughan, and was Duke Ellington’s favourite sound engineer. He developed the famous 1176 Peak Limiter and distributed the Teletronix LA-2A level amplifier. This earned him a posthumous “Technical Grammy Award” in 2000. In 1999, Putnam’s sons, Bill Putnam Jr. and James Putnam, re-founded Universal Audio, transferring their father’s analogue vision and craftsmanship to the digital music world. Their product range includes audio interfaces, dedicated DSP farms, and a variety of plug-ins, as well as analogue hardware devices.

Perfect in stationary and mobile setups

Taking up no more than an A5 notebook and weighing less than 1kg, the Universal Audio Volt 176 is the perfect choice not only for simple stationary setups that have to meet high standards but also for mobile recording setups that do not require more than one channel to be recorded for each source. This audio interface can be conveniently powered via USB or, if all USB slots are already in use, via a 5V adapter (available separately), which also allows it to be used as a stand-alone microphone preamp for simple live sessions. The various audio sources are adjusted for the on-board compressor via specially tailored presets for vocals, guitars, and dynamic percussion sounds from drums or other percussion instruments. Thanks to its Kensington lock, the Volt 176 can also be easily secured against theft.

Not for windows users
Over Eten Podcast 28.12.2023
The device is gorgeous and well built, however, the issues start once you install the asio driver. Poorly written windows drivers cause crackles and pops during the output, distracting you from your mixes. Shame, because I was excited to use tue compression features. After some googling, I learned it’s a common issue for UA products and windows pcs. However, every trick the internet tells you to fix the crackling did not seem to work, so the volt has to go. Went for a focusrite scarlett instead and have 0 issues now.

Best paired with high impedance headphones (DT 770 pro 250s are a match made in heaven), it’s really a lot more powerful than it seems. Also better to plug it into wall! It’ll suck the life out of your laptop. Once you’ve got this sorted it’ll blow mind.
